About Friendship
Two large concentric ring forms fill the canvas and overlap near the centre. The upper form is a blue spiral: bands of cobalt, black and pale sky blue wrap around a small light blue disc set slightly right of centre. Below it sits a smaller oval of rust brown, cream, olive and dark brown rings enclosing an orange centre with a yellow core. The background is a deep red-brown, worked rough and uneven. Paint is built up thickly, with combed ridges and scraped grooves catching light across each band.
The effect is of two eyes or shells turned towards each other, one cool and one warm, held together by heavy texture and earth-toned ground.
Suits a living room with warm timber, terracotta tiles or tan leather, where the rust ground picks up the furniture and the blue spiral gives contrast. Works above a sideboard, in an entry hall, or in a study with plain white or clay-coloured walls. Pairs with woven baskets, ceramics and brass lamps.
