A horse gallops through shallow water with a rider in the saddle, one arm raised and a lasso looping in a wide circle beside him. The horse's mane streams back, its tail flares out behind, and its front legs reach forward as the hooves strike the surface and throw up spray.
The photograph is black and white, with a dark, grainy sky streaked by a shaft of light and a bank of bright cumulus clouds on the right. A flat, empty plain runs along the horizon. Drops of water hang in the air across the left side, and the wet ground below reflects the pale sky.
