About Harmony
A single figure fills the canvas, built from flat interlocking shapes in the cubist manner. The cream and yellow head tilts to the left, marked by one large almond eye ringed in crimson and a coiled yellow spiral standing in for an ear. A small olive oval sits above like a cap. A tapering pink shape crosses the body diagonally, read as the neck of a lute or guitar, with a brown hand and three black bars marking the strings. Deep green fills the upper corners.
Sharp red and orange wedges cut in from both sides, hatched with fine parallel strokes, and a band of blue with a wavy black line closes the base. Dark outlines hold every shape in place and small zigzag motifs run along the cheek and collar. The overall character is bold and rhythmic, a music picture that reads as pattern first and figure second.
Strong enough to carry a plain wall in a lounge room, music room or study, and a good lift for a white hallway. Sits well with mid-century timber, rattan and black metal, and picks up cushions or rugs in green, pink or crimson. Hang it above a piano, record shelf or console table.
