About Heat of the Sun
The upper two thirds of this upright canvas are filled with dry-brushed orange, running from a hot tangerine at the top edge into deeper amber and rust lower down. Paint has been scrubbed and scraped so the weave of the canvas shows through, with small flecks of charcoal and red breaking the surface. On the right, a dark smoky patch of brown and grey-blue sits under the orange like a shadow. At the left, a soft chalk-white area opens up and cools the heat.
The lower third shifts to slate grey, with short strokes of turquoise, pale blue and off-white scattered across a scratched, gritty surface. The join between the warm top and the cool base is left blurred rather than drawn. It reads as weather or a burning horizon without ever settling into a scene, which is its appeal: warm and unsettled, with plenty to look at up close.
Works above a sideboard in a hallway, or on a neutral wall in a living room where the orange can lift grey and stone-coloured furniture. Pairs with linen sofas, oak or walnut timber, brass lamps and black metal frames. Suits a tall narrow wall between windows, or a bedroom wall above the bedhead.
