About Hidden Valley
A pale cream road winds in a long S-curve from the lower centre of the canvas up into the hills, crossing a low bridge with a row of short balustrades near the bottom edge. Rounded hills and simplified trees are built up in layers of deep bottle green, olive and moss, with a tall cone-shaped tree at the centre. Small houses sit on either side: a red-roofed cottage at lower left, cream buildings with square windows and a tall arched doorway at right, and further roofs stepping up the slope. The sky is a flat wash of warm cream and pale yellow.
Everything is reduced to smooth curves and flat planes, with soft blended brushwork and no hard outlines, giving the village a quiet, dreamlike order. The signature "D. Cola" sits in the lower right corner.
Suits a living room or dining wall painted in warm white, stone or soft sage, and works well above a sideboard or a long timber table. The deep greens sit comfortably with rattan, linen and potted indoor plants, while the terracotta roofs pick up clay pots and leather chairs. Also good in a hallway or study.
