About Highlander
A long-horned Highland cow fills the lower two thirds of a plain white field, facing forward with its head slightly turned. Two pale grey-white horns sweep wide and upward to the top corners, drawn with thin ink outlines and a light wash inside. The face is built from tan and ochre watercolour washes, with a darker shaggy fringe of black ink strokes falling between the eyes and over the muzzle. Ears sit low and loose on either side, edged in scratchy line.
The shoulder and neck are suggested with dry, broken washes of caramel and mid-brown that fade out before any background begins, so the animal appears to float on the paper. A small artist's mark sits at the lower right. The character is quiet and confident: a few decisive lines and thin washes do all the work, leaving plenty of white space around the subject.
Works in a hallway, bedroom or home office where white or limewashed walls suit the open space around the cow. Sits well above a timber sideboard, a leather armchair or a country-style bed head, and pairs with linen, rattan and other animal or botanical line studies in matching tan and charcoal tones.
