About Horse Courage
A single horse fills the square, caught mid-movement as it rises from the ground with forelegs folded beneath its chest. The body is built from loose tan and sepia washes that pool darker along the neck, chest and hindquarters, while the belly and shoulder stay almost bare cream. The mane is drawn in ragged black ink strokes that flick backwards in spikes, and the same fast black line traces the jaw, nostril, knee and hoof. Wide unpainted canvas surrounds the figure on all four sides.
The washes show visible watery edges and dry-brush gaps, so the animal reads as partly finished and full of motion. Its character is quick and economical: a few decisive lines and a handful of earth-toned washes carry the whole sense of muscle and effort.
Works in a bedroom above a timber bedhead, in a hallway, or in a home office where the pale ground keeps the wall feeling open. Suits country and beach house interiors, linen bedding, rattan and leather. Pairs well with other sepia animal sketches or a plain cream or oak frame.
