About Hovering Darkness
A broad wash of mauve and dusty pink fills the upper two thirds of the square canvas, thinned and blended so no brush edge shows. Across the low horizon sits a scattered band of blocky forms: a dark slab roof to the left, a tall rust-red post, a cluster of pale grey and white walls at centre, and an olive-brown shed to the right marked with a small chartreuse rectangle. A single orange figure stands just below centre, the brightest note in the picture.
Below the buildings the paint softens into salmon, warm apricot and violet reflections, as if wet ground or shallow water is catching the light. Edges dissolve rather than end. The character is quiet and hazy, a half-seen place held in warm fog, with the one orange mark giving the eye somewhere to settle.
Suits a bedroom, formal lounge or hallway with warm greys, oatmeal linen and pale timber. The mauve and salmon tones sit well above a soft grey sofa or a dark walnut console. Good in rooms with low, warm lighting, and it pairs with other muted abstracts rather than bright colour. Browse more the Statton Collection, abstract oil paintings, purple and pink art.
