A single translucent block of ice sits in the lower left of the frame on dark volcanic sand. Its pale blue edges are rough and faceted, and a thin skin of foam curls around its base. The sand is wet and almost black, so the ice reads as the brightest and sharpest object in the scene.
A long exposure turns the incoming wash into soft white streaks that sweep across the sand towards the viewer. Further back, green-tinted waves break under a flat grey sky, and smaller pieces of ice are scattered along the shoreline to the right. The palette is cool: charcoal, ice blue, teal and white. It is a photograph.
