Five old leather-bound volumes stand upright in a shallow timber case, filling the square frame from the shelf board at the base to the moulded rail across the top. The spines differ in width and wear: a dark cracked binding at left with faded gilt lettering, a thicker olive-toned volume stamped BAUMEISTER, a grey-green centre spine reading ROUSSEA above a scrolled gilt cartouche and the word DISCOURS, then a deep red spine with raised bands and small gold tooling, and a mottled blue-green binding at right.

Behind and between the books the space falls to black, throwing the gilt detail forward. Surfaces read as scuffed leather, flaking gold leaf, split corners and darkened glue, with the warm grain of the timber shelf framing all four edges. The character is quiet and scholarly, a still life about age and use rather than titles, and the tight square crop keeps every worn edge in view.
