About Jazz Saxophone
A saxophone fills the centre of the canvas, tilted so the bell curves out to the right and the crook and mouthpiece angle up into the top left corner. The body is painted in blue-black, white and grey with flecks of red caught along the keys, and the bell rim is ringed in deep blue and maroon. To the right stands a thin microphone on a stand, its lead falling in a loose black squiggle. The background is scarlet, swept through with yellow and orange strokes that fan out behind the horn like stage light.
The paint is laid on thickly with a knife, so ridges of colour catch the light across the bell and the red field. It reads as loud, warm and motion-filled, a music-club subject handled with bold colour rather than fine detail.
Suits a music room, rumpus room or home bar, and works above a record player, piano or a row of guitars. The scarlet and orange field lifts a dark grey or charcoal wall, and it sits well with black leather, timber shelving and brass lamps. In a lounge, hang it as the single warm accent.
