About Jazzin' Up
A crowded band scene built from flattened, angular shapes. In the lower half a pianist in a dark coat and pale blue brimmed hat leans over the keyboard, fingers on black and white keys, with a round stool at the left edge. Behind him a double bass player in a white shirt and dark waistcoat draws the neck of his instrument diagonally across the canvas. A saxophone rises beside the piano, a second sax is held by a figure in a white jacket and lavender hat at the right, and a brass horn and cups rest on a dark bar top.
Colour sits in earthy bands: cream and ochre for hats and jackets, charcoal and deep olive for coats and shadow, a slate blue floor and a burnt orange strip at the top left. Cymbals and a red-banded drum catch the pale yellow light behind. The brushwork is broad and flat, with visible edges where one shape meets the next rather than blended transitions. The mood is busy and rhythmic, a small ensemble mid-set rather than posed portraits.
Suits a dining room, bar area or hallway where a tall vertical fits between doorways. The cream and ochre read well on charcoal, white or warm grey walls. Pairs with timber furniture, brass fittings, a record collection or a piano, and works in lounge rooms that already use earthy textiles and leather.
