About Autumn Birch Grove
A row of slender birch trunks stands across the full width of the canvas, painted in thick white and cream strokes with black knots and horizontal scars. The trunks lean at slightly different angles, some crossing near the base. Above them, foliage is built from short dabs of lemon yellow and orange, with patches of pale blue sky showing through the canopy. Behind the trees the undergrowth burns scarlet and crimson, shading to violet and olive green near the ground, with fine dark twigs scratched over the red.
The paint sits high on the surface, laid on with a knife so the leaf dabs and trunk edges catch the light. It is a loud, high-contrast autumn scene where the white verticals hold the heat of the reds and yellows in place.
The long horizontal shape suits a lounge room wall above a three-seater sofa, a hallway runner wall, or behind a dining sideboard. The white trunks work with pale walls and light oak or ash timber, while the scarlet and yellow lift neutral linen upholstery, grey rugs and black metal shelving.
