About Sunlit Meadow Poppies
A wide band of meadow fills the lower two thirds of the canvas, packed with poppies laid on in thick palette knife strokes. Yellow blooms dominate the front row, some tipped with cream, each centre marked by a small dark dot. Orange and scarlet flowers sit higher on thin stems, with clusters of white blossoms scattered between them. Long green and olive grass blades rake upward in single flicking strokes, crossing the pale blue sky. A soft yellow-white sun glows just left of centre behind the stems.
The paint stands proud of the surface, so raised ridges of yellow and orange catch the light while the sky stays thin and smooth. It reads as a bright, breezy field at midday, cheerful without being sweet.
The long horizontal shape suits the wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bedhead. The yellows and greens work with white or pale grey walls, oak and rattan furniture, linen upholstery and green indoor plants.
