About Lady Dancing Samba I
A woman is shown from behind, cropped at the hips, her dark hair pulled into a low bun at the nape of her neck. One arm lifts above her shoulder with the fingers curled, the other reaches out to the right, holding up a wide sweep of black skirt that fills the lower right of the square. Her bare shoulders and back are modelled in warm beige and soft brown shading. Behind her the wall is rust red and terracotta, streaked vertically with lighter ochre and worn patches.
Faint lines of pale handwriting run down the left edge of the background, adding texture to the flat colour field. The mood is quiet and poised rather than theatrical, the whole image resting on the contrast between deep black fabric and warm red.
Suits a bedroom above a bed head, a hallway with warm white or clay-toned walls, or a dining space with timber furniture. It pairs with rattan, leather, brass lamps and terracotta pots.
