About Lost in the City
A grey tabby cat with wide green eyes takes the place of a sitter in an Elizabethan portrait. The body wears a black embroidered gown with a tall lace ruff, a long rope of pearls, puffed sleeves and a wide skirt covered in fine pale scrollwork. One gloved hand holds a beaded purse, the other a small posy of pink roses. Behind her rise two sepia-toned skyscrapers, drawn in tight rows of windows, with a strip of green grass at her feet.
Above the buildings the sky is speckled and pale, with cut-out clouds, three small pendant lights hanging on wires, a newspaper clipping reading Success, the ringed planet Saturn and a deep red sun disc. The texture is that of aged paper and printed halftone, flat and graphic rather than glossy. The character of the piece is dry and witty: a formal court portrait dropped into a modern city, deadpan and slightly absurd.
Suits a home office, study or hallway where a bit of humour is welcome, and works in a living room with dark timber, leather or vintage furniture. Pairs with brass lamps, old books, botanical prints and other collage or curiosity artworks. The black gown reads well against cream, olive or warm grey walls.
