About Midnight Zebra Gaze
A zebra's head fills the canvas in close crop, turned slightly so one eye meets the viewer. The eye is painted as a glossy black almond with a burnt-orange iris that glows against the surrounding black. Stripes run down the neck on the right in wide bands of black, white and soft grey, each band laid in with a loaded brush so the edges stay blunt and slightly ragged. Across the forehead and muzzle the stripes break into flat blocks of red, cobalt blue, yellow and pale aqua, with a small orange mark near the nostril.
The background is solid black, so the lower jaw and chest dissolve into darkness and the striped neck carries all the light. Brushwork is direct and unblended, with visible ridges where the paint was pushed across the weave. Its character is bold and graphic, an animal portrait treated as colour design rather than wildlife study.
Works in rooms that can take a strong graphic note: a white or charcoal lounge wall, a hallway end, a teenager's room, or above a dark timber sideboard. Pairs with black metal frames, leather seating and monochrome cushions, and gives a plain black-and-white interior a single point of colour without adding pattern.
