About Lady in the Red Hat
A square canvas holds a woman shown from the shoulders up, turned slightly away. The dominant shape is a wide red hat whose brim sweeps from the upper right corner down to the left edge in thick, ridged strokes of pure scarlet, outlined in loose black line. A white and red flower with a green centre sits at the crown, beside small patches of olive green, tan check and brown. Orange-flecked dark hair falls behind the right shoulder. The background and skin are flat mid-greys lifted with white knife marks.
The mood is graphic and light-hearted: a fashion silhouette reduced to one bold red shape against grey, with just enough texture to catch the light.
Suits a bedroom, dressing area, hallway or a small lounge wall where one strong colour is enough. The grey ground sits easily with concrete, pale timber and white walls, while the red picks up cushions, a rug or a red vase. Good above a console or low chest of drawers.
