About Paris Romance
The Eiffel Tower rises through the upper two thirds of the canvas, its lattice built up in fine grey and pinkish strokes against a sky of scumbled lilac, white and pale blue cloud. Below, a red open-top sports car swings toward the viewer on a wet pavement, its bonnet and flanks carrying bright white highlights and a sharp reflection down the door. A couple stand up through the cockpit in an embrace, the woman in a pale dress, the man in a white shirt. Dark trees and a small stone kiosk close the middle distance.
The paint handling shifts from smooth, almost photographic work on the car to thick knife-loaded dabs of gold, red and grey in the puddled foreground. It is a bold, cinematic image: one saturated red shape set against a soft grey Paris sky.
Suits a lounge room, apartment hallway or bedroom with grey, white or charcoal walls, where the red car becomes the single point of colour. Works alongside chrome or black metal furniture, leather seating and other Paris or travel pieces. The upright shape fits a narrow wall between windows or above a console table.
