About Master and Servant One
Two figures walk away from the viewer across a flat orange field. The taller one wears a deep crimson robe that falls in heavy folds from the shoulder to the ankles, one bare heel lifting off the ground, and raises a hand to hold a large round parasol in scarlet above the head. The smaller figure walks a step behind and to the right, wrapped in the same pink-red cloth, with a pale band around the crown of the head. Both have dark cropped hair and brown skin at the neck and feet.
The background is a single warm wash of orange and yellow ochre, dragged and scraped so the canvas weave and small ridges of paint show through, with rust-coloured shadows pooling beneath each pair of feet. Highlights on the robes are brushed in pale pink along the folds. The mood is quiet and companionable, carried entirely by silhouette, colour and the space between the two walkers.
The hot orange ground lifts a plain white or grey hallway, and the portrait shape fits a narrow wall beside a doorway or at the top of stairs. It works in a dining room with timber furniture, rattan and terracotta pots, or above a bed with rust, ochre and dusty pink linen.
