About Maternity II
A seated woman fills most of this upright composition, turned three-quarters and bending her head towards the small child cradled against her chest. Her hair is a deep auburn, gathered high and loosely pinned, and her face is reduced to warm ochre and shadow with no fine detail. The long white dress spreads wide across the lower half of the picture in cream, pale mauve and grey. Behind her the background is a flat wash of soft grey-blue, with a band of dark brown running down the left edge.
Edges are deliberately blurred and colours are laid in broad flat areas, so the figure reads as a shape and a gesture rather than a likeness. The mood is quiet and inward, tender without being sentimental, and the soft white and grey-blue keep it calm rather than dramatic.
Suits a nursery, main bedroom or a quiet reading corner where the grey-blue background can sit against pale walls.
