About Ember Windows
Four soft-edged squares sit across a portrait canvas, arranged off-centre so they step down from the top right to the lower left. Each square is filled with warm gold and amber paint, and each holds a pale cream patch at its centre where the surface has been combed and scratched into fine feathery marks. Around them the ground is deep burnt red and rust, darkening to brown along the left edge and in the lower middle, where the paint pools into a warmer, glazed hollow.
Thin dark lines trail loosely down the surface like lengths of wire or dried stem, doubling back across the red field and over the edges of the squares. The paint is layered and slightly translucent in places, so lighter under-colour glows through the red. Overall it reads as heat and embers held in a quiet grid, warm rather than loud, with texture doing most of the work.
Suits a lounge room with warm timber, leather or terracotta tiles, and works above a fireplace or a low sideboard. The gold centres lift dark walls and charcoal sofas, while the red ties in with rugs, copper lamps and brass fittings. Also good in a dining room where lamplight catches the raised texture.
