About Molten Cascade
A square composition built from overlapping rectangular fields. Warm ochre and gold fills the centre and upper left, bordered on the right by a deep rust red block and on the lower left by a darker brick-toned panel. A pale blue-grey band runs horizontally across the upper third, broken by a dark charcoal wedge, and a second grey wash appears along the bottom edge. Fine incised lines score the gold, and a ladder of short gold strokes runs vertically through the red on the right.
The paint sits in thin, dry-brushed layers, with scraped and sanded patches letting lower colours show through, giving the surface a weathered, plastered look. Its character is quiet and architectural, warm rather than loud, with the grey bands cooling the rust and gold.
Suits a living room above a low sideboard, a dining wall with timber furniture, or a hallway that needs warmth. It works with tan leather, jute rugs, terracotta pots and brass or bronze fittings, and sits comfortably against off-white, putty or charcoal walls. The square format balances a single armchair or a round mirror opposite. Browse more abstract oil paintings, brown and earthy art, the Statton Collection.
