About Poplar Plain
A square landscape divided across the middle by a low dark hedgerow. The lower half is a broad field of burnt orange and terracotta, brushed on in flat, dragged layers that leave streaks of paler ochre near the horizon. On the left a narrow poplar rises like a column, its foliage a dense olive and black. To the right a taller tree with a rounded crown carries flecks of yellow-green and rust over a dark trunk. Two smaller trees sit between them in soft focus.
Above, the sky is pale grey washed with lavender and cool white, blurred so no cloud edge is defined. Edges throughout are deliberately soft, as though seen through heat haze, while short stippled strokes give the canopies texture against the smooth field. The mood is quiet and warm, a still hour on open farmland with nothing moving.
Suits a lounge room, dining room or bedroom with warm timber, linen and rattan. The burnt-orange field picks up terracotta pots, leather and clay-toned cushions, while the grey sky keeps it calm against white or greige walls. Works well above a low sideboard or bedhead, or as a single square above a fireplace. Browse more landscape oil paintings, the Statton Collection, earthy tones.
