About Winter Spark
The square canvas is divided into four broad fields that meet near the centre: soft mid-grey at the top left, cream white at the top right, chalky white below left and a darker charcoal wedge at the lower right. Where the fields meet, a burst of colour spreads outward in short palette-knife strokes of scarlet, orange and yellow ochre, edged with thick white and black marks. Fine red and black lines flick out from the centre like thrown threads, with a few small white dots along them.
The painted surface carries visible knife ridges and a fine crackled texture in the pale areas, so light catches the impasto. Its character is quiet and controlled until the centre, where the hot reds cut sharply across the cool grey and white.
Suits a lounge room above a low grey sofa, a white or concrete-look hallway wall, or an office reception. The square format works over a sideboard or in a stairwell grouping.
