About Golden Whorl
A single large spiral fills the centre of the canvas, built from thick concentric rings of gold paint that coil inwards to a small raised knot slightly above the middle. The ring edges are uneven, so the outer loop reads as a rough circle rather than a neat one, with one lasso-like line looping past the top left. Behind it the canvas is divided into vertical bands: a warm ochre and amber strip down the left edge, a broad rust and maroon column through the centre, and a darker aubergine-brown band on the right.
The background is scraped and dragged, letting streaks of copper and pale grey show through the deeper reds like weathered metal. Light catches the ridges of the gold, so the spiral shifts between pale straw and burnished bronze depending on where you stand. The character is quiet and focused, one strong circular gesture holding a set of earthy vertical stripes together.
Suits a warm interior with timber, leather or brick: above a tan sofa, in a dining room with walnut furniture, or on a narrow entry wall where the gold catches lamplight. It works with deep reds, charcoal and unbleached linen, and sits well beside brass lighting or a dark-framed mirror. Browse more the Statton Collection, abstract oil paintings, gold art.
