About Daisies on Crimson
Twelve white daisies and several closed buds stand against a flat field of deep crimson that deepens to rust in the lower corners. Each bloom sits on a long, thin gold-ochre stem that runs almost the full height of the canvas, curving slightly so no two stems match. The petals are painted in soft white with grey-lilac shading at the edges, and the centres are rounded dabs of orange and yellow. The taller daisies cluster at the top, while three open blooms and a small bud sit lower, filling the middle.
The background is worked smoothly with a faint glow behind the flowers, so the red reads as warm rather than heavy. The overall character is calm and graphic, with the simple white shapes doing all the work against a strong warm ground.
Works above a sideboard or dining table in a room with warm timber, terracotta or cream walls. The red ground suits spaces with leather, rattan or brass details, and the long stems suit a wide wall above a low bench. Good in a hallway or kitchen where a single warm colour anchors the room.
