About Vase in the Alcove
Two clay vessels sit at the centre of the canvas, a taller pink-terracotta jug behind a squat rounded pot, both resting on a pale cream panel that runs from top to bottom like a lit alcove. A thin bare stem rises from the jug and curves to the left, ending in two small white blossoms near the top edge. Around this centre the canvas is built from interlocking rectangles in rust, deep maroon, ochre and burnt orange, with horizontal cream bands cutting across the lower half.
The paint is laid on thickly, with a crackled, plaster-like surface across the brown blocks and fine ridges catching light in the cream panels. Edges are drawn with dark, slightly wavering lines rather than ruled ones. It is a quiet, architectural piece: warm earth colours held in order by geometry, with the small floral stem as the only soft note.
Suits warm neutral rooms: a dining room with timber furniture, a hallway above a console, or a lounge with tan leather and jute. The rust and ochre blocks pair well with terracotta pots, brass lamps and cream linen. Works over a sideboard where the square shape balances a low, wide piece of furniture.
