About Multitude
Four elongated female figures stand close together in the centre of the canvas, each simplified to a smooth oval head with no features and a long tapering gown. The tallest wears deep blue and turns slightly away; beside her a figure in olive green faces forward; in front, a shorter figure in orange and red stands with hands unseen; at the right, a slimmer figure in pink leans in. Behind them the background is built from flat squares of teal, rust orange, olive and ochre, arranged like a loose grid.
The paint is laid on in thin, even layers with combed and scratched marks swirling through the blue panels, giving the background a worked, slightly chalky surface against the clean flat colour of the gowns. It reads as a quiet group portrait about companionship rather than likeness, warm and decorative without being busy.
Suits a lounge room, hallway or bedroom with white or pale grey walls, where the rust and teal blocks can carry the colour scheme. Works above a sideboard or a low sofa, and pairs with timber furniture, woven baskets, terracotta pots and cushions picking up the orange and pink.
