About Mustang One
A single dark horse fills the centre of the canvas, caught mid-movement with its hindquarters turned towards the viewer and its head thrown up and back to the left. One foreleg is raised and bent, the hoof lit with a pale cream highlight. The body is painted almost black but shot through with teal, emerald and warm red-brown where the light strikes the shoulder, flank and rump. The mane streams upward and the long tail sweeps out to the right in broad, feathered strokes.
The background is a wash of pale olive and cream, brushed in wide diagonal sweeps with a grey-brown band across the lower edge suggesting ground. Brushwork is loose and directional, with the paint dragged in the direction of the horse's motion so the edges of the tail and mane break apart into separate strokes. The result is an animal study that reads more as energy and movement than as a portrait of a particular horse.
Suits a hallway, living room or study where the landscape shape can sit above a low sideboard or sofa. The pale olive background works with cream, sage and warm timber walls, and the teal-black horse pairs well with leather, brass lamps and dark-stained furniture. Also a natural fit for a stable office or equestrian-themed room. Browse more animal art, all hand-painted oil paintings.
