About New York III
A square night photograph of Lower Manhattan seen across the water from an old pier. Two long rows of weathered timber pilings rise out of the river in the foreground, their cracked, dark grey tops catching gold light, and they run in receding lines towards the city. Behind them the skyline is packed with towers, their windows burning amber and gold against desaturated grey concrete and a flat, heavy grey sky. A long exposure has smoothed the water to a glassy sheet streaked with warm reflections.
The colour treatment keeps everything grey except the city lights, so the gold reads as the only living element in a cold scene. The repeating pilings give the image strong depth and a quiet, still mood.
Suits a living room or home office with dark timber, charcoal upholstery or exposed brick, and works in a bedroom where the gold picks up brass lamps or warm bedside lighting.
