About Old Steam Train
A black steam locomotive fills the left two thirds of the frame, photographed low and close from the front corner so the cowcatcher, wheels and coupling rods sit near eye level. The round smokebox door carries a dark red centre disc inside a white ring, with the number 20 stencilled on the white-topped headlamp housing above. Behind the cab, a deep red timber passenger carriage with a row of windows and a yellow stripe is followed by a dark green carriage running off to the right.
The sky is clear blue with thin streaks of white cloud, and the track sits on pale gravel and timber sleepers. Detail is sharp on the rivets, pipes, valves and worn metal of the engine, and the colour is strong and contrasty. The character is documentary and nostalgic: a working machine recorded in plain daylight rather than styled or softened.
Suits a home office, study or hallway where the long horizontal shape fits above a desk or console. Works in a boy's bedroom or a rumpus room, and in industrial interiors with timber, leather and dark metal. Pairs well with maps, aviation or motoring prints and with navy, charcoal or tan furnishings. Browse more blue art, brown and earthy art, or read Art above the bed: what size and how high.
