About Orchid Trio II

Three groups of cattleya orchids fill a portrait composition against a deep oxblood red background that darkens towards the corners. At upper centre, pink and white blooms are heavily speckled with magenta dots. Below right, two large white orchids open wide, their ruffled lips marked with yellow and rose. On the left, burnt orange flowers cluster together, one lower bloom showing a crimson throat. Long olive and yellow-green leaves arch between them, with woody brown stems rising from the base.

The red ground is not flat: soft tonal shifts and faint vertical streaks give it depth behind the crisp, botanically accurate flowers. The overall character is rich and traditional, closer to an old plate illustration than a modern floral, with strong warm contrast between the orange petals and the dark red field.

The deep red ground suits formal dining rooms, panelled hallways and sitting rooms with dark timber or leather furniture.
