About Outstanding One
A single large red bloom sits just left of centre, its five broad petals painted in long sweeping strokes with black dragged through the red to mark the folds. At the heart, a tangle of fine white stamens is drawn in thin raised lines. Behind it, a second red flower crowds the top right corner, while solid black petals push in from the left, lower edge and right side, one showing a small ochre and yellow centre. The background is pale grey-blue, broken by patches of mottled brown and grey.
Fine white outline leaves and flicked white dots drift across the whole surface, tying the red, black and brown areas together. The effect is graphic and high-contrast, bold at a distance yet full of small line work up close.
Works well on a light or grey wall in a lounge room, dining room or entry where red is picked up by cushions, a rug or a red vase. It suits black-framed furniture, white joinery and glass, and holds its own above a dark sideboard or a charcoal sofa without needing other artwork beside it.
