A large round hay bale sits in the lower left foreground, its coiled straw catching warm orange light. More bales are scattered across the cut paddock behind it, getting smaller toward the middle distance. The stubble has a rough, combed texture, and long shadows stretch across the ground from each bale.
Beyond the paddocks a broad valley of rust and ochre fields runs back to a long, jagged mountain range with pale, layered rock faces. Above it the sky is a deep violet with faint streaks of cloud. The photograph has saturated colour, and the orange foreground against the purple sky gives it a strong glow.
