About Red Duo I
Two large trees fill the upper corners of this square composition, their canopies painted as solid crimson masses with fine scratched lines running through the red like veins. Each canopy sits on a cluster of slender, pale gold and ochre trunks that fan down through the middle of the picture. Between them the sky opens as a warm cream void, faintly marked with a soft grey shape near the centre. Below, a band of pale teal water meets a low blue ridge on the horizon.
Beneath the water sits a strip of olive and yellow-green grass flecked with small blue dashes, then a heavy band of dark brown and near-black earth across the base. The mood is quiet and graphic: bold red shapes held in balance by a calm, cool horizon.
The strong red canopies read well above a neutral sofa in a living room, or on a cream wall in a dining room where the olive and teal bands pick up planting and glassware. It suits contemporary and beach house interiors, pairing with pale timber furniture, linen upholstery and brass or black metal lighting.
