About Red Portal
A single medallion sits at the centre of a deep red, leather-like field. An ochre ring studded with short spikes encloses an oval of dark olive and charcoal, and inside that a smaller gold star-burst surrounds a rough red core with a raised dot at its middle. The red ground is built up in thin, mottled layers so the surface reads like worn pigment on plaster, lighter around the top edge and deeper towards the corners.
Four loose clusters of small gold droplets mark the corners, each a scatter of raised beads that echo the spikes on the ring. The raised gold lines catch light and cast small shadows, giving the flat red plane real depth. The character is quiet and emblematic, more like an ancient shield or seal than a decorative pattern.
Works over a sideboard or fireplace in a room with warm neutrals, timber and leather. The portrait format suits a narrow chimney breast, hallway end wall or stairwell. Pairs with terracotta, aged brass lamps, jute rugs and dark-stained furniture, and holds its own as a single piece on a white or clay-toned wall.
