About Skies Within Reach
Roughly four fifths of this upright canvas is sky, built up in deep indigo and cobalt blue with heavy, crusted paint that catches light across the surface. Pale grey and white patches push through the blue like cloud breaks, one glowing near the upper left, another to the right beside a dark smudge of storm cloud. A long horizontal band of white drifts across the lower sky. Below, a narrow strip of land runs in ochre, rust and olive green, flecked with small dabs of gold.
The mood is weather rather than place: a heavy sky pressing down on a thin, warm horizon. The thickly worked blue and the soft, blurred edges give it a quiet, slightly brooding character.
Works in a bedroom above a low bedhead, in a hallway, or in a study where a tall narrow wall needs filling. The deep blue sits well with pale grey walls, oak or walnut timber, linen bedding and brass lamps, and the ochre strip picks up tan leather or jute rugs.
