About Solitary Swirl
A single large spiral fills the right side of the canvas and runs off the top, right and bottom edges. It winds inward through bands of rust red, burnt orange and deep brown, tightening to a small dark hole at the centre ringed with bright red. Thin white lines follow the curve of each band, catching the raised edges of the paint and giving the whole form the look of a cut tree round or a coiled clay pot. The left third is left open as a soft warm grey field, lightly mottled and scraped.
The character is quiet and tactile: one strong circular motion held against plain ground, with the ridged paint doing most of the work. A small signature sits low in the spiral.
Works in a living room above a low timber sideboard, in an entry hall, or in a bedroom over the bed head. The warm grey ground sits well with concrete render, limewashed walls and linen upholstery, while the rust bands pick up leather, terracotta pots and aged brass lamps.
