About Gathering Under a Golden Sun
Five elongated figures stand in a row across a band of gold and cream ochre that runs horizontally through the centre of the canvas. Their bodies are painted in thick white robes with black heads, arms and legs; two raise their arms above their heads in curved loops, one holds a thin upright staff and another carries a long horizontal spear. Above them a small spiral sun in bright yellow sits against a deep red sky streaked with dark plum and slate blue.
The red ground below the figures is scraped and scumbled, with pale looping script incised into both the sky and the foreground like faded handwriting. Brushwork is dry and layered, letting earlier reds and browns show through the gold. It reads as a quiet, ceremonial scene reduced to silhouette, warm and graphic rather than detailed.
Works well on a plain white or warm grey wall in a lounge room, dining room or entry hall. The deep red and gold sit comfortably with timber furniture, leather, rattan and woven baskets. Hang it above a sideboard or a low sofa, and keep nearby décor simple so the row of figures stays the focus. Browse more modern art, all hand-painted oil paintings, square paintings.
