About Strum
Two seated figures fill the centre of the canvas, broken into flat angular planes in the cubist manner. The player on the left holds a round-bellied mandolin painted in yellow ochre with red banding and a dark sound hole; his face is a pale mask with two dot eyes and a small blue mouth, capped with black hair. Beside him a second figure with a patterned headband and a split blue-and-white face leans over a pale guitar shape. Their clothing is built from wedges of teal, cream, crimson and green.
The background is a warm red wall that shifts to burnt orange along the floor, with a small turquoise stool and a red-brown table leg below. Brushwork is flat and deliberate, with firm black outlines holding each plane in place and slight ridges of paint where colours meet. The mood is lively and rhythmic, a picture about sound and shape rather than likeness.
Suits a music room, lounge or hallway with plain white or grey walls, where the red ground can carry the space. Works above a sideboard, a piano or a record cabinet, and pairs well with timber furniture, black metal shelving and other geometric or mid-century prints.
