About Sunny Figs
Two or three bare trees fill the canvas, their trunks rising from the lower edge and splitting into a dense web of branches that reaches every corner. The limbs are painted in a pale grey-white, laid on in raised ridges of paint so each branch sits slightly proud of the surface. Behind them the ground is a deep ochre-amber, brushed unevenly so patches of gold, rust and olive show through. Softer brown branches are painted flat into that background, reading as a second row of trees further back.
There is no horizon, sky or ground line, only the pattern of limbs against colour. The effect is warm and graphic, closer to a decorative screen than a landscape study.
The strong ochre field suits rooms with white or pale grey walls, timber floors and rattan or linen furniture. It works above a sideboard in a dining room, in a hallway, or over a bed with mustard and cream cushions. Pairs well with brass lamps, terracotta pots and dark timber frames.
