About Tempo
A single figure fills the centre of this portrait canvas, drawn in smooth curves rather than anatomy. The small oval head tilts forward on a long neck, and the shoulders sweep out into a wide cream shawl patterned with looping orange and green scallops. Two pale blue hands, painted as flat fans with separated fingers, rest on the skins of two conga drums. The drums are banded in orange and gold with darker hoops, their tops catching a soft cream light.
The background is built from broad blocks of olive and bottle green, warm ochre and a panel of scrolling red at the right edge, all blended with soft, dry brushwork and no hard outlines. The mood is quiet and rhythmic, a picture about the moment before the beat rather than the noise of it.
Suits a music room, lounge or hallway where warm colour is welcome. The olive and burnt orange sit well against cream, clay or timber walls and pair with rattan, leather and brass. Good above an upright piano, a record shelf or a sideboard, and it works as a single statement piece rather than part of a pair. Browse more music art, people and figures, abstract oil paintings.
