About The Astronaut Balloon
A small astronaut in a white suit stands at the lower right of a plain sage-green field, one gloved hand holding a fine string. The string rises to an oversized round balloon that fills the top two thirds of the picture. Inside the balloon is a deep navy night sky scattered with white five-pointed stars, a pale crescent moon at the left, a soft grey band of cloud or galaxy dust running diagonally, a mustard ringed planet and a smaller tan planet. A faint shadow pools under the astronaut's boots.
The drawing is flat and graphic, with speckled grain in the navy circle and soft chalky shading in the cloud band and the helmet dome, which reflects its own patch of stars. The character of the piece is quiet and imaginative rather than busy: one figure, one balloon, and a lot of calm empty green space around them.
Made for a nursery, a child's bedroom or a play corner, especially with sage, dusty blue or natural timber furniture.
