About The Second Storey
The square canvas is built from horizontal bands stacked one above the other. Gold and pale yellow fill the upper third, broken by a narrow scarlet stripe that runs the full width. Below sits a wide band of rust and orange, heavily worked so the surface reads as pitted and granular. A broad cream-white band sweeps across the lower centre, scraped with fine horizontal combing, and beneath it a deep brick-red band darkens towards the left corner. A small upright cream rectangle interrupts the ochre band on the left.
Paint is applied thickly and then dragged, stippled and scored, so raised ridges and small beads of pigment catch the light along each edge. The character is quiet and architectural: warm earthy colour held in place by flat, deliberate horizontal divisions rather than gesture.
The warm reds and golds work well above a leather or tan fabric sofa, in a dining room with timber furniture, or in an entry hall with cream walls. It pairs with brass or bronze light fittings, rattan, terracotta pots and jute rugs, and suits a single square wall between two windows or above a low sideboard.
