About Traditional Japanese Ink II
The upper half of this square composition is filled with dense black ink that thins as it falls, breaking into grey mottling, speckles and drip-like streaks before ending in a torn, uneven edge across the middle. Below that line the surface is clean white, empty except for two marks in the lower left: a vertical column of three brushed Japanese characters and, beneath them, a small square seal printed in bright vermilion red. The granular texture of the ink reads clearly against the flat white ground.
The character of the piece is quiet and weighted, with all the visual activity pressed into the top half and the lower half left open. That contrast between a heavy charcoal band and wide white space gives it a calm, considered feel rather than a dramatic one.
Suits bedrooms, bathrooms, entry halls and study walls where the palette is already restrained. It works with pale timber, white walls, linen bedding and black metal fittings, and pairs well with ceramics, a single red accent such as a cushion or vase, and other black and white square prints in a grid.
