About Variation for Violins
A long row of violins stands shoulder to shoulder across the full width of the canvas, bodies overlapping like people in a crowd. Each instrument is filled with a different flat colour: crimson, cobalt, turquoise, mustard yellow, hot pink, tangerine and soft violet, with a few left white and outlined only in black. The necks, pegboxes and scrolls are drawn in heavy black ink, rising in a repeated vertical rhythm. Behind them the background is off-white with faint scribbled loops of pale blue and grey.
