About View of Sunset
A wide band of sand-coloured rectangles, ruled off like paving blocks, runs diagonally from the lower left to the upper right and divides the canvas in two. Above it sit flat cream and off-white panels broken by a tall maroon rectangle near the centre top and a smaller rust and yellow block at the top left. Below the band, orange, red and soft yellow bleed sideways through a pale haze before settling into a chalky white strip along the bottom edge.
The paint is laid on thinly in places and built up in others, so scraped grey-white passages sit beside crusted maroon and glowing ochre. It reads as a quiet, warm abstract with an architectural backbone rather than a loud colour statement.
Suits a living room with warm white or greige walls, above a low sideboard or a linen sofa. The sand and rust tones pick up timber floors, jute rugs, terracotta pots and leather seating. It also works along a hallway or in a dining room where the horizontal band echoes a long table. Browse more abstract oil paintings, the Statton Collection, earthy tones.
