About Vintage New York in Black II

A square collage places the Chrysler Building dead centre, its stepped crown and tiered spire rendered in pale stone grey against a near-black sky. Behind and around it, an antique engraved map of New York is overlaid in fine white line work, with lettering reading NORTH RIVER, NEW YORK ISLAND and EAST RIVER running down the edges, plus a compass rose at the upper right. Lower blocks of surrounding towers are built from torn paper fragments in taupe, charcoal and bone.

In the bottom left corner a cartouche reads A Plan of the City and Environs of New York in North America, printed on aged cream paper. Surface texture reads as layered, slightly creased paper with visible edges, speckling and soft mottling through the dark ground. The character is quiet and , a graphic city portrait rather than a bright cityscape, with contrast doing the work instead of colour.
