About The Cafe Waiter
A stout waiter stands in the centre of the canvas, painted with an oversized bald head, heavy brows, a small moustache and one eye shut in a wink. He wears a black dinner jacket with puffed sleeves, a white shirt and bow tie, and a long cream apron that falls to his shoes. A white cloth hangs over his right forearm while his left hand tips a large pink oval tray dotted with ringed glasses. Behind him sit a small round table, a dark wine bottle and an olive-green parasol.
The background is loosely brushed in lilac and sandy ochre, with a yellow cobbled floor sketched in short strokes beneath his black shoes. The paint is soft and slightly chalky, with visible canvas texture through the pale areas. Its character is comic and good-natured: a restaurant scene reduced to one exaggerated, likeable figure.
